Raising Awareness of M.E in Scotland

Mary Fee MSP aims to raise awareness of M.E. in the Scottish Parliament,
and to force the Scottish Government to address the severe challenges sufferers face in their daily lives.
As convener of the Cross-Party Group on M.E.,
Mary Fee MSP aims to raise awareness of the issues that sufferers of M.E. face every day,
such as lack of support or recognition from health professionals, and
misunderstanding and stigma in the media and the general public
At its latest meeting the Cross-Party Group set up six working groups
that will look at areas involving education and training of health professionals,
education of children and young people, needs assessments, research and support
In May this year, Mary Fee will host an event in the Scottish Parliament,
with Action for M.E, M.E. Research UK, the M.E. Association, the 25% Group and several local M.E. groups,
to further raise awareness among MSPs of all parties during M.E. Awareness Week 2012
As part of the recent Scottish Labour Party Cabinet reshuffle,
Mary was promoted to Convener of the Equal Opportunities Committee and
hopes that this will provide an excellent opportunity
to address issues of equality that sufferers of M.E. face in Scotland.
Mary also expects the Scottish Government to listen to the needs
of those who suffer needlessly, by increasing support for M.E. sufferers.
Speaking from the West Scotland MSP Office in Paisley, Mary added –
“The needs of M.E. sufferers are often overlooked
as there is little in the way of understanding what M.E. is and
how it affects the everyday lives of those who live with it.
What is needed is a greater effort to raise awareness of the illness and
I hope that over the next year the Cross-Party Group can push for changes
that will improve the support and knowledge of M.E
Working with all the M.E. groups involved
I am sure that the Scottish Government will listen and start to address the issues
that face those who are stigmatised or ignored due to the lack of understanding of M.E.”
